After releasing their first studio album Killin'it (2024), P1harmony are back with their seventh mini-album, SAD SONG. Released on 20 September 2024, the group once again demonstrates their musical versatility with their unique voices. They are definitely a group that evolves musically, never knowing what to expect from their releases. The group is made up of six members: Keeho (vocalist), Theo (vocalist), Jiung (vocalist, dancer and rapper), Intak (rapper, dancer), Soul (dancer and rapper) and Jongseob (rapper and dancer).

The EP opens with the title track ‘SAD SONG’, a song with an infectious energy and a fast pace that contrasts with the title. It combines various styles such as Latin mambo, hip-hop and, of course, pop. The transitions between the verses and the chorus are very well executed, with the rhythm alternating from calm to faster in the chorus. The chorus ends up centred on Keeho's voice, which, per usual, shines wherever he is.

The second track, ‘It's Alright’, has a calmer rhythm. The song deals with the process of coming to terms with the end of a relationship. Despite the upbeat melody, the lyrics convey feelings of bitterness associated with this acceptance. Here, it's Jongseob and Intak's voices and raps that stand out for their fluidity.

‘Last Call’ introduces a guitar-driven sound reminiscent of bands like One Direction and Big Time Rush. Bringing a nostalgic and cheerful feel, the track stands out for its vibrant energy and catchy melody. The song addresses the need to take a break from the daily grind, encouraging you to enjoy the present moment without worrying about tomorrow. With a sound that mixes elements of pop and rock, the song conveys a sense of liberation and celebration, inviting listeners to indulge in the party and let go of their anxieties.

The next song, ‘Welcome To’, harks back to their debut Siren (2020). With a strong guitar presence and choruses that invite the audience to sing-along, the track becomes powerful. The song conveys a sense of confidence and determination, as if welcoming a new challenge or affirming the group's identity (‘Welcome to/Here we go again/Chapter two/Here we go again’).

‘All you’ is the fourth track and the love song on this album. It comes across as a cheerful, optimistic song with a catchy melody that could easily be on the soundtrack of a Korean drama. Its softness will warm anyone's heart. The lyrics convey the idea of always being there for someone, regardless of the circumstances, making it a sincere and emotionally impactful song. In other words, an authentic serenade (‘I take half of my heart/And fill the missing part of your heart with mine’).

The penultimate song, ‘Wasp’, is a duet between the two main rappers, Intak and Jongseob. With influences from Western rap and hip-hop, such as Travis Scott, the two members demonstrate their confidence and attitude through their verses and the beat marked by a fearless vibe. The modern, aggressive sound emphasises the chemistry between the two members, making it a powerful track full of personality. Despite not featuring all the members, it ended up becoming a fan favourite.

The EP closes with the English version of ‘SAD SONG’, which flows naturally, almost as if it had originally been written in that language. P1Harmony demonstrate a remarkable capacity for linguistic adaptation, while maintaining the emotional integrity of the song.

All in all, SAD SONG is proof of the continuing evolution of P1Harmony, who with each release grow in popularity, not only in Korea but worldwide. Sold-out concerts all over the world are proof of this. From Latin rhythms to Western rap, they never leave out the essence of k-pop. At the end of the day, SAD SONG isn't just a reflection of P1Harmony's artistic growth: it's also proof of their talent, as they innovate and venture into the world of music.
