ROOM UNDER THE STAIRS is Zayn Malik's fourth studio album. Released on 17 May this year, it represents a remarkable artistic and personal evolution for the English singer. Unlike his previous albums, this disc moves away from the R&B sounds we're used to hearing and incorporates elements of folk, country and blues. This results in a more introspective and emotionally pure listening experience.

Zayn opens the disc with the song "Dreamin". This song is an excellent example of his ability to combine lyrical introspection with a catchy melody. The song's gentle melodic line is characterised by simple acoustic chords and arrangements that highlight Zayn's vulnerability. With verses that evoke dreamlike images and feelings of hope, "Dreamin" addresses themes of overcoming and personal acceptance.

On 15 March, Zayn released his first single from the album, which would later become his second track. The melody is led by acoustic guitar chords, giving it an intimate and reflective atmosphere. The artist explores themes of self-acceptance and the search for authenticity in a complicated relationship. The lyrics reveal an internal struggle as he tries to understand his place in the relationship and his emotions. Phrases like ‘Am I crazy, am I foolish, am I stupid for playing these games with you?’ show his questioning of his own sanity and his decisions. Malik asks to be accepted for who he is, rather than judged for what he says, reflecting a search for understanding and emotional stability. The metaphor of having ‘two feet in the sand’ suggests an attempt to find firm ground in the midst of uncertainty.

The seventh track "Stardust" is defined as the project's love song. Zayn reveals that the track is a relief of love that the album needs to balance out the predominantly sad themes. He says that while many songs deal with a lack of love or the end of a relationship, "Stardust" captures the essence of love and the feeling it offers. This track stands out for bringing hope and affection in the midst of the prevailing sadness.

"Shoot at Will" is a track that encapsulates a poignant moment of reflection when it comes to his family life. Zayn asks himself, "When I look at her, all I see is you / When you look at her, do you see me too?" In this way, he unravels the complexities of his emotional journey, hinting at the profound impact of fatherhood and the echoes of his relationship with his former partner, Gigi Hadid. This glimpse into Zayn's personal life adds layers of depth to his art, revealing a vulnerability beneath the surface

T    he album closes with "Fuschia Sea". The song creates a sense of longing and nostalgia, with Zayn expressing his feelings of loss and longing for a love from the past, ("I'm tired of the grey / I'm sick of the pain"). The ‘fuschia sea’ represents a place full of colour and life, contrasting with the feelings he is experiencing.

The production is subtle and atmospheric, using acoustic instruments and ethereal synthesisers that create an enveloping soundscape. The track stands out for its ability to convey a quiet melancholy, where Zayn uses his soft voice to show a living love that is gone but still leaves deep scars.

As such, the album ROOM UNDER THE STAIRS marks a new phase in Zayn's career, where he uses vulnerability and simplicity to produce genuine, personal music. This change of direction emphasises his development as an artist and offers a new vision of his personal and emotional journey. Over the course of 49 minutes, Zayn presents his audience with a new adventure in the world of music.
